His mother, Julia Pauline (née Burns; 1901–1994), was a homemaker, and his father, George David Newhart (1899–1987), co-owned a plumbing supply firm. Julia had Irish heritage, while George was of both German and Irish background. The surname Newhart is derived from German (originally Neuhart). One of Bob’s grandmothers came from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He was raised with three sisters.
