Joyce Anne Dewitt is the daughter of Paul Dewitt (born April 23, 1949) and Norma Dewitt. She grew up in Speedway (Indiana), a suburb near Indianapolis.
She has competed in speech contests and debate competitions through the Indiana High School Forensic Association.
She received a bachelor of arts in theater at Ball State University and then began her graduate studies at the University of California in Los Angeles. She graduated from there in 1974.
